Piracy and Copyright
Piracy involves the installation and use of copyrighted software. The United States Department of Justice has taken significant action in recent months against groups who illegally distribute pirated materials over the Internet. Beginning with Windows XP, Microsoft has integrated safeguards to ensure that pirated software cannot be updated. On the music piracy front, several associations monitor filesharing on networks and download clients in order to identify and prosecute those who illegally distribute copyrighted music files.

Use caution when accepting burned CDs from friends or acquaintances. Burned or copied CDs will have hand-written titles on the top as well as the name of the CD manufacturer (i.e., Memorex, TDK, etc.). CDs may contain freely distributed software or music, but it is always important to ask or investigate online.
