Laptop Computer Requirement for Graphic Design Majors
The Department of Art is committed to the integration of technology and art, where appropriate, and the teaching/learning process. To provide graphic design majors the opportunity to learn more effectively and become competent using the computer as a graphic design medium, we are requiring participation in the university laptop program for all incoming freshmen beginning in fall 2004. The laptop program described below, is recommended for art studio major and minor students.

Incoming graphic design majors are recommended to obtain a laptop computer that is equivalent to the Tier 2 Apple offered through the laptop program.

If participation in the laptop program is simply not possible for you at this time, the Department of Art continues to maintain an eighteen-station computer graphics classroom/lab where all required assignments for graphic design courses can be completed. This lab is open Monday-Friday during daytime hours and is accessible to graphic design majors on weekends and weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 1 a.m. Even if you have your own system, the lab is available to you during the hours listed. In addition, graphic design students may use the resources provided by the Graphics Center on West Campus.

One advantage to having your own system is that you have access to necessary software at any time. You will not need to plan your schedule around the graphic design lab hours and you will not need to wait for a station to become available during busy times. The other main advantage of being part of the laptop program is that all of the graphic design software that is needed for the major will be included, along with a set of typefaces that will match those found in the classroom lab.

The included software programs are listed below:
  1. The Adobe Creative Suite 2 package, which includes Illustrator, PhotoShop, InDesign, ImageReady, and Acrobat
  2. The Macromedia graphic design package, which includes Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Freehand, and Flash
  3. The Adobe Education font package
A one-time fee of approximately $650 will cover the cost of these items, which will be owned by the student.

The laptop program will also recommend two options for adding an external mouse to your system; further details will be available soon.
