Laptop Use Tutorial

Warranty Overview
  • The warranty covers defects in workmanship or equipment, as well as typical "wear and tear"; some examples are corrupted hard droves, defect CD drives, and ports or buttons that do not function correctly
  • Students are responsible for all non-warranty repairs
  • If there is a problem with a laptop, please bring it to IMT right away; this ensures that the student will receive a loaner laptop for the interim and thereby never be without a working computer
Theft and Loss
  • All laptops are covered by full theft insurance within the United States (foreign countries excluded)
  • There is a $1,000 deductible for negligent loss or theft
  • If a laptop is stolen, file a Campus Safety report and contact the IMT Support Desk immediately
Technical Assistance
  • For any technical difficulties with a laptop, bring it in for evaluation or assistance
  • If IMT cannot repair the laptop within 30 minutes, the student will receive a "loaner laptop" that is theirs until their original laptop is in satisfactory condition
  • For general or non-repair inquiries, contact the laptop program coordinator at (626) 815-3831 or via email at laptop@apu.edu
Battery Life & Charging
  • All 2008 HP and Apple models have an optimum battery life of approximately 5 hours
  • When using the laptop on battery supply only, the operating system will warn the user when the battery life is low
  • All laptop models charge more rapidly if they are off while charging
Memory Key Use
  • Remove the memory key cap
  • On one side is an imprint with the capacity of the memory key; insert the key into a USB port with the aforementioned side facing up
  • Give the operating system a few moments to detect the memory key
  • In Windows, go to Start > My Computer > DOK (E:); in Macintosh OSX, a Disk on Key icon will appear on the desktop
  • Files can be copied through drag-and-drop or by saving directly to the memory key (the same way files are saved to a hard drive or floppy disk)
  • In Windows, the memory key needs to be properly ejected when finished; to do so, left click on the green arrow icon to the right of the clock and select USB Mass Storage Device (E:) from the list
Changing a Windows Password
  • In Windows, go to Start > Control Panel
  • Double-click on the User Accounts icon
  • Click on the account name or picture near the bottom of the window
  • Click Change My Password
  • Enter the current password (if assigned) in the top box; in the following two, type the new password
  • Click Change Password
  • The password has been created or changed; close the window
Creating CDs in Windows XP
  • CD creation is integrated into Windows XP so that no additional software is required
  • Go to Start > My Computer
  • Find a file to burn to CD; right-click it and select Send To > CD-RW Drive (D:)
  • An icon will appear near the clock along with a notification that files are waiting to be burned to CD
  • Repeat step 3 for all desired files; when finished, double-click the icon near the clock and click Write These Files to CD
