Virus Protection
Students who do not update their computer and virus scanner at least twice weekly are putting their network access and that of their roommates, neighbors and friends at risk. Viruses can also damage computer files and distribute themselves via email or via the network to other at-risk computers.

Fact: one virus-infected computer can wipe out wireless network access for up to 20 dorm rooms.

Fall 04, APU and thousands of other universities were attacked by droves of viruses, some of which compromised network access. Many schools were forced to turn off network access completely for weeks or even months. While APU worked hard to keep the network alive, many students experienced slow or unreliable connections over the course of the school year due to the destructive nature of Blaster, Welchia, and other viruses.

In the interest of delivering high-speed internet access to every member of the student body, APU changed the way students log onto the network. To ensure that computers connected to the network have all current operating system updates and are virus-free, all Windows users must now download validation software and all users (Apple and PC) must log in to the authentication system.

If you do not have a Norton or Symantec virus scanner installed, you will not be able to access the network. But not to fear—Norton AntiVirus is available to all APU students free of charge! For more information, click here.

It is imperative that students update their virus definitions at least twice weekly. Two to five new viruses are discovered every day and students are not protected against these if they do not update regularly. The updating process only takes a few minutes, and new virus definitions can be downloaded and installed without interfering with the use of other software. To update Norton AntiVirus:
  • Start up the computer and log into Windows normally
  • Once Windows has finished loading, double-click the icon in the system tray (the area to the left of the clock if the start menu is at the bottom of the screen) that looks like a yellow/gold computer mouse
  • On the window that appears, click the button entitled LiveUpdate
  • Follow the on-screen instructions
